T-Mobile is launching a new suite of skinny TV bundles aimed at cord cutters.
The cellphone carrier on Tuesday staged a virtual event to unveil the services, which will offer access to live television for as little as $10 per month. It is also getting into the connected TV device game with a streaming device dubbed the TVision Hub.
With its lineup of skinny bundles, T-Mobile enters a crowded market already dominated by offerings from YouTube, Hulu, AT&T and Dish Network. Services such as FuboTV and Philo also offer cheaper, niche live TV offerings.
These services all launched in recent years to attract customers put off by expensive and restrictive cable packages, but it can be hard to make money offering a low-cost alternative to pay TV because of the cost of offering in-demand networks to customers. Sony opted to shut down its live TV offering, PlayStation Vue, earlier this year, citing the “highly competitive pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals.”
T-Mobile is entering the market with prices that will undercut many of the existing offerings. Its TVision Vibe offering will include 30 channels — mostly entertainment offerings that don’t feature news or sports — for $10 per month.
But for a more complete channel lineup, its prices aren’t much different than many established products. Its TVision Live packages start at $40 per month for access to about 30 channels, including NBC and ESPN. The highest-priced option is the TVision Live Zone package, which offers around 50 channels for $60 per month. For comparison, YouTube TV costs $65 per month for access to 85 channels and Hulu’s live TV offering costs $55 for access to 65 channels.
T-Mobile will also start selling a la carte subscriptions to premium channels including Starz, Showtime and Epix.
“People are ready for real choice and real change in home TV, maybe this year more than ever before,” T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said in a statement.
The company’s streaming device, TVision Hub, will retail for $50, slightly more expensive than Roku’s base offerings. It will provide access to the T-Mobile skinny bundles as well as third-party apps like Netflix.
All new products and services will become available Nov. 1.
