Paramount Home Entertainment’s True Grit lived up to its name, hanging on to the No. 1 spot on the overall disc sales chart for the second consecutive week despite the DVD and Blu-ray Disc debut of three high-profile theatricals.
One of these, Sony Pictures’ Battle Los Angeles (which earned $83.4 million in U.S. theaters), narrowly squeaked into the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc sales chart, although True Grit, in its second week in stores, still sold nearly 99 percent as many copies as the sci-fi actioner about an alien invasion.
On the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks total disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined, True Grit maintained a similar lead over Battle, which debuted at No. 2.
Also new in stores the week ending June 19 were a pair of Warner titles, the comedy Hall Pass ($45 million) and the horror fantasy Red Riding Hood ($37.7 million), which finished at No. 3 and No. 4 on the overall sales chart and in fourth and fifth place on the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart.
Moving up to No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart was Universal Studios’ Back to the Future Trilogy, which reappeared on the charts the past few weeks for the first time since its release last fall due to a price promotion.
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Battle Los Angeles debuted at No. 1, bumping True Grit to No. 2. The two other new releases failed to place because Warner is among the studios with a 28-holdback from Netflix and Redbox.
