Chip Canter, the former NBCUniversal executive who has been overseeing Verizon’s push into digital video through its go90 app, has parted ways with the company.
A Verizon spokesman confirmed the news Wednesday morning. Richard Tom, the former Vessel CTO who joined Verizon in late 2016 after the telecom giant bought his startup, and his team have assumed responsibility for all Verizon mobile digital products.
Verizon launched go90 in late 2015 as a home for highly produced digital video. Over the last year and a half, the app has been on a buying spree, scooping up dozens of short-form and mid-form scripted and unscripted series, as well as rights to live streaming sports and exclusive streaming rights to some full TV series. But the app, which is free and supported via advertising, has struggled to gain traction with audiences.
Canter was brought in last August as part of a hiring wave that included chief content officer Ivana Kirkbride to help go90 focus its vision. Under their leadership, the app zeroed in on a more targeted programming strategy that includes dramas, live sports, horror and genre, and music and culture.
In late 2016, Verizon acquired Vessel — the streaming service co-founded by former Hulu executives Jason Kilar and Tom — and has leveraged its engineering team to redesign go90. The app relaunched at the end of March.
Now, with Canter’s departure, Tom and his team will lead the efforts at go90. Verizon’s full statement reads: “Chip Canter is no longer with Verizon. Since integration, Richard Tom and the Vessel team have been on-boarded and are fully up and running and have delivered a strong product. Effective immediately, Richard and his team will assume full responsibility for all mobile digital video products.”
