Entertainment website WorldStarHipHop is getting serious with a new web series.
The online video destination has snagged drama All That Matters from creators Meagan Good (Anchorman: The Legend Continues) and Tamara Bass (Boston Public). Five episodes of the series will premiere March 9 on WorldStarHipHop with an additional episode rolling out each week thereafter.
All That Matters stars Bass and Tracey Dukes as Joy and Kevin, a newly engaged couple whose lives are changed forever when Joy’s sister Rochelle (Candice Renee) disappears after leaving her 5-year-old daughter (Josiah Smith). This is the first web series from Bass and Good’s Krazy Actress Productions. They are co-producing alongside executive producers WorldStarHipHop founder Lee “Q” O’Denat and MTV personality Sway Calloway.
“I sat down one day and thought, ‘instead of complaining about some of the content that I see on TV, why not just create something,'” says Bass. “I wanted to ask the question: what happens when your life changes in 24 hours and it’s not the way you designed? What makes a family and what sacrifices do you make for the people you deem your family? I thought a web series was a nice, contained way to explore this dynamic.”
Good explains that the series, while a drama, also has lighter moments that appeal to short-form content on the web. “I write drama because it’s a universal language,” she adds. “Family drama is universal. Life throwing you curveballs is universal.”
WorldStarHipHop was founded in 2005 as a destination for pop-culture videos and user-generated content. The company has expanded into original productions with projects including documentary series The Field. It is also working on a series for Adult Swim and has a film in development with Paramount’s Insurge label. But All That Matters is the first foray into a scripted drama for WorldStarHipHop.
“I fell in love with the story,” says O’Denat. “The story speaks to what so many of us go through. That’s one of the reasons I was intrigued by it, and I think a lot of our audience can relate.”
