The new studio follows the online video giant’s opening of European posts in London and Berlin, as well as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, and Sao Paulo.
The studio will be located in the Google headquarters close the central St. Lazare train station on the edge of the city’s hip ninth arrondissement.
The new location will aim to attract French YouTube stars such as Cyprien, a comedian and gaming star with more than 7 million subscribers. Cyprien recently hinted at the move, announcing in a Snapchat video that he would be moving production from his apartment into a studio to improve video quality.
Other French YouTube stars include Norman Thavaud, a 27 year-old comedian, who produces under the name “Norman makes videos,” with over 6.3 million subscribers, and Remi Gaillard, with 5.1 million subscribers.
DailyMotion, YouTube’s homegrown French competitor, has had its own 6,500-square-foot production studio in Paris since 2013. The company’s content production partners who use the studio are required to upload their videos to DailyMotion exclusively for a period of time.
DailyMotion still lags behind YouTube with about 230 million unique visitors per month, compared with Google’s 1 billion. Vivendi recently acquired a majority stake in the company after deals with Yahoo, Microsoft and Hong Kong-based PCCW were thwarted.
Vivendi has announced plans to use its music and media properties, including Universal Music Group and CanalPlus, to grow the video platform.
The YouTube Paris studio is slated to open in the coming weeks.
