YouTube creator Ray William Johnson is teaming with Supergravity Pictures to produce a documentary aimed at exposing the “horrendous monopolies” in the cable industry and detailing how the Internet is poised for similar consolidation.
Johnson will produce the currently untitled film with Kaja Martin through their Mom & Pop Empire banner alongside Supergravity’s Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt. Supergravity will finance and distribute the film with an eye toward an event theatrical release and global digital release.
“Cable monopolies have had this coming for a long time,” Johnson said, with Martin adding, “There has been no better time in history to make a project so important to our generation.”
Few other details about the project are available, but the film is described as one that will “expose the death of the cable monopoly and the rise of the Internet monopoly.”
“The same Internet that has allowed for this whole new media landscape is at the same time threatened by a business model that puts that choice at risk,” said Hustvedt. Added Benator: “Both as someone who’s constantly frustrated by the way we’re falling back into a consolidated, controlled media landscape and as a huge fan of Ray’s vocal, comedic take on the universe, I can’t wait to dive into this project and ultimately share it with a wide audience.”
This is the third project from Supergravity, which launched in November with thriller The Chosen starring YouTube creator Kian Lawley. The studio also acquired Justin Chon and Kevin Wu buddy comedy Man Up.
Johnson is known for YouTube series Equals Three, a talk show about viral videos that he hosted from 2008 to 2014. He has more than 10 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, but has also branched out into other formats. Through Mom & Pop Empire, he and Martin executive produced indie film Manson Family Vacation with Mark and Jay Duplass. The film premiered at South by Southwest and was subsequently acquired by Netflix.
