AMAs: 5 Seconds of Summer Wins New Artist of the Year

"This just shows that a little band from Sydney can do great things"

5 Seconds of Summer won the Kohl's-presented New Artist of the Year award at the 2014 American Music Awards.

The excited boy band seemed a bit at a loss for words at first with Michael Clifford saying, "This is the first time we've ever done this, so this is awesome."

"This just shows that a little band from Sydney can do great things," added Ashton Irwin.

5 Seconds of Summer beat Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Sam Smith and Meghan Trainor for the honor, which was their only nomination of the night. Like all other AMA trophies, the New Artist honor was voted on by fans, but while voting in the other categories closed before the show, people could vote online and via Twitter through the first hour of the live broadcast.

Azalea was the most-nominated artist going into Sunday night's show with six nods. Among the other new artist contenders, Bastille and Smith were each up for one other award. The new-artist trophy was Trainor's only nomination.

5 Seconds of Summer also performed on the AMAs, joining a lineup that included Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Azalea, Mary J. Blige, Charli XCX, Fergie, Lorde, One Direction, Smith, Garth Brooks, Selena Gomez, Imagine Dragons and host, Pitbull.

Azalea was the most-nominated artist going into the show, with six nods. Other multiple nominees included John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams, who had five each, and Lorde, with a handful of nods.

One Direction and Perry were the big winners, though, each nabbing three trophies, with Azalea and Beyonce taking home two apiece, including Azalea's first-ever award.

The AMAs aired live from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live from 8 to 11 p.m. on ABC.

The 2014 American Music Awards were produced by Dick Clark Productions, a sister company of The Hollywood Reporter.
