AMAs: One Direction Wins Artist of the Year

One Direction took home the biggest award of the night at Sunday's American Music Awards, winning the artist of the year trophy.

The honor was the boy band's third award of the night, also taking home awards for favorite pop/rock band, duo or group and favorite pop/rock album.

The group beat out Iggy Azalea, who was the most-nominated artist going into Sunday night's show; Beyonce; Luke Bryan and Katy Perry for the artist of the year prize, presented by Heidi Klum towards the end of the show.

One Direction, which also performed during the AMAs, thanked the team from their label, their management and security detail and parents as well as the fans.

The group's rabid fans could be heard screaming during their acceptance speech.

The AMAs aired live from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live from 8 to 11 p.m. on ABC.
