Ayla now stands at the center of Carrey's backyard. "She holds all of the magic and power of the universe in her head and she's basically basking in the moonlight," he says, noting that her eyes open when a full moon reflects off her eyelids. "On full moon nights, she wakes up."
Though the majority of Carrey's recent social media use has been Trump-focused, he will still take to Twitter on occasion to comment on other subjects. On April 28, he posted his sketch of the embattled comic Bill Cosby, with the caption: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves —Matthew 7:15."
Accompanying a drawing that Carrey tweeted out to his large and growing Twitter following in late June, he wrote, "Christianity, Trump style: 'Jesus was a loser. A failed carpenter. He's a savior because he was crucified. I like people that weren't crucified.' http://www.vote.gov."
"This girl's just had laser peels and they're hanging out doing some cocaine," he says of the scene depicted in his 2010 painting, Disappearing at the Laser Peel Party, which hangs in his home. "The invisible man is ascending the staircase because he realizes there's really no place for him here but they're using his credit card."
A Carrey painting, titled Eva, from 2016. Of late, Carrey has been using the pool house at his Brentwood home as his studio, though he plans to build a bigger studio on his property.
A Carrey political cartoon, tweeted in June 2018, includes the caption: "40% of the US doesn't care if Trump deports [people,] kidnaps their babies and uses them as political hostages. The time for diagnosis is over. It's cancer. Midterms are America's last chance at remission. REGISTER TO VOTE. We can beat this disease! vote.gov."
"I do a lot of Christ," he says of his 2016 painting, simply titled, Jesus. "But I don't really think of it in terms of Christianity terms. I wanted to capture Christ's consciousness coming kind of through the ether. And you would be able to find every race in his face."
No Vacancy was done in 2012, making it one of Carrey's earlier works. "Up until a few years ago, I didn't put my paintings up," he says. "I hid them away. I don't know why exactly, there was just the feeling like, 'They're not good enough or I'm not good enough or who would want to see my paintings on the walls.'"
"Oh Say, Can't You See?!" read the caption that accompanied his February 2018 sketch of a child killed in a school shooting.
Sewage Contains Politics, a sketch from March 2018. The caption reads, "Did anyone watch 60 Minutes last night? Hell of a piece about a poor kid from Greece named Giannis Antetokounmpo who’s making it big in the NBA. America still has some magic. Pity you have to wade through so much cultural sewage to find it. ;^}"
A tweet to Carrey's nearly 18 million followers on Aug. 10. His caption: "Has your Presidency jumped the shark? Better called SPACE FORCE! To stupidity and beyond!!! vote.gov."
An Aug. 1 tweet, captioned: "Squeeze Mueller Squeeze." Carrey often finds himself sketching late into the night, after he's worked himself up watching cable news. His preferred channel is MSNBC, his preferred host Rachel Maddow.
The Prison of Becoming was done by Carrey in 2015. Of the piece he says, "Presence is the butterfly that lands on your finger. And in that moment, he was freed from the prison of becoming, because what you're gonna be and how things are gonna work out and how you're gonna get things done is the prison that most of us live in all the time. I wish I hadn't done that or if I hadn't done that, I would've been able to do this. It's that time-travel that is the enemy. So, the prison of becoming."
A 2010 piece, titled Unfinished Abandonment of Self.
A sketch tweeted on June 17, featuring Trump policy adviser Stephen Miller, captioned: "Sanctioned, embraced, normalized by POTUS, evil is pushing the boundaries. Sociopaths have risen to the top. This Father's Day we'll abduct children from their families at our border because the GOP has no bottom and Stephen Miller wasn't what his father wanted. #bewaretheunloved."
