"I really believe there is a 16-year-old girl inside of every man, and I wanted to make The Neon Demon about the 16-year-old girl inside of me," said Nicolas Winding Refn of his Elle Fanning starrer. "In the end I wanted to make a teenage horror film."
Bardem, who was attached to the film even before Penn, said he’s been interested since he read the script in 2000. "The love story, … the relationship is what drew me to the project," he said.

The film centers on Roberto Duran, a Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16-year?old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50. In June 1980, Duran defeated Sugar Ray Leonard to capture the WBC welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in their November rematch, famously saying the words "no mas" ("no more").
Edgar Ramirez portrays Roberto Duran onscreen.
Usher Raymond plays professional boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, the adversary to Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez). "I knew I really had to, first off, change my diet," says Usher of training for the film, "and then learn to really understand what these boxers were going through."
Jonathan Jakubowicz directs the boxing movie. "When you're shooting in Panama, the world capital of boxing, and you have 600 extras, there are at least 50 professional boxers among them."
Raging Bull star Robert De Niro returns to the ring, this time playing trainer Ray Arcel, who worked with Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez). "I trained hard for Raging Bull and Grudge Match, but these guys were terrific," says De Niro of co-stars Ramirez and Usher. "They really were committed to it."

THR's review said that Paul Schrader, who penned Taxi Driver, "has managed to freshen up a familiar format" and "has just gone for it here with a highly focused recklessness that he turns to his creative advantage."
THR's review also said of Nicolas Cage, "The long-in-the-wilderness actor actually comes off here as accomplished and even, believe it or not, appealing in a way; his Troy may ultimately find himself over his head but his attempt to take charge of a situation and momentarily rise above his true nature inspires a peculiar sort of admiration."
