Team USA figure skater Ashley Wagner may have made the cut for the Winter Olympics, but the judges didn't seem too impressed with her performance. When she was given a score of 63.10 — putting her in fourth place — she wasn't too happy about it, mouthing a rather obvious "bullshit" on camera. Of course, the Internet exploded with GIFs of her expression, but at least she looked good with bright red lips.
Russia's Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov skated to Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake" in the team figure skating competition on Sunday, both wearing black, presumably to channel their inner black swan. Ilinykh wore a black beaded ensemble complete with a tutu and gloves that rivaled the outfit popularized in Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 film Black Swan. Move over, Natalie Portman, you have some major sartorial competition.
Unlike fellow skater Ashley Wagner, ice princess Gracie Gold was all smiles while competing in the team figure skating competition for Team USA. The 18-year-old wore a blue gradient long-sleeve ensemble with beaded details. We'd like to call this crystal blue persuasion.
U.S. skater Jason Brown, 18, wowed the crowd with a Riverdance-inspired routine with an outfit to match: a long-sleeve green shirt with black pants and a big, beaded belt. Oh, and did we mention the bronytail? Yeah, that’s a thing now.
Figure skating vet Johnny Weir retired from the sport and is now an NBC skating analyst. His off-the-ice fashion, however, has garnered more attention than many of the competitors at this year’s Winter Olympics. So far, Weir has sported ruffled tops, gold chains, big fur coats, flashy rings and braided hair, just to name a few. Many have praised him for his bold fashion choices, which, he said in an interview with Philadelphia Magazine, were inspired in part by Stanley Tucci’s Caesar Flickerman in the Hunger Games series.
Russia's pride and joy, 15-year-old figure skater Julia Lipnitskaia, wowed the judges in the team figure skating competition, but some controversy has arisen surrounding her costume choice. Lipnitskaia skated beautifully — she led Russia to team figure skating gold — to the theme song from Schindler’s List, dressed as the film’s iconic "girl in the red coat." The question now is, did the Russian darling bring attention to a serious issue or is she exploiting the tragedy on which the film is based? We'll let you be the judge.
Russian duo Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov delivered a spirited routine set to the Addams Family theme song. Stolbova wore a cute little red number, but what really caught our eye was Klimov, who wore an attention-grabbing black-and-white-striped blazer with red trim, perfectly matched to the music. Is that Gomez Addams we see on the ice?
American sweethearts Meryl Davis and Charlie White helped the U.S. skating team claim gold at Sochi. Davis' dress — complete with partly bare midriff and intricate beading — was certainly eye-catching, but we’re most interested in the dynamic duo's chemistry. They have been skating together for a whopping 17 years!
U.S. pair Simon Shnapir and Marissa Castelli skated a James Bond-inspired routine, set to the Skyfall theme. It wasn’t too surprising to see Shnapir sporting a gun holster — the program took a cue from the man with the martini, after all. But he is representing America, and some anti-gun advocates were not too pleased.
Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov claimed gold for Russia in pairs figure skating on Feb. 12. Impressive, but we can't stop thinking about the duo's costumes from their pairs short program from the night before. All eyes were on Trankov's very dapper military-style jacket, and Volosozhar dazzled in an icy blue, bejeweled outfit.
