‘Once Upon a Time’: Disney Characters

Snow White

Snow White was the central character of the 1937 film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Like the Disney character, Once Upon a Time's Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) had an evil stepmother, and a prince who woke her up with true love's kiss. Though Snow and Charming (Josh Dallas) had to wait for Regina's (Lana Parrilla) spell to break to get their true happily ever after, they've now reunited with their daughter, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) (and her son, Henry (Jared Gilmore)), and have a son, Neal.
Prince Charming

Prince Charming appeared in the 1937 film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but little was known about him. In Once Upon a Time, Prince Charming/David (Josh Dallas) was a shepherd, whose twin brother, James, was given to the king. After James' death, David takes his place and falls for Snow…though he was engaged to someone else for political reasons. He woke Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) with true love's kiss (the one constant from the movie), and their happy ending was brief: Regina (Lana Parrilla) cursed everyone to Storybrooke, sans memories, and it took Charming and Snow's daughter, Emma, (Jennifer Morrison) to give her own true love kiss (to her son, Henry (Jared Gilmore)), for the spell to be lifted.
The Evil Queen

The Evil Queen appeared in the 1937 film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Though the movie version was motivated by vanity, Once Upon a Time's Evil Queen/Regina (Lana Parrilla) was driven by heartbreak: after Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) revealed to Regina's mother, Cora (Barbara Hershey), that Regina was in love with a stable boy, and Cora killed him, Regina vowed revenge. She got it by casting a curse which gave the characters amnesia and brought them to Storybrooke. Regina became mayor and adopted a baby — who was Snow and Charming's grandson, Henry (Jared Gilmore) — and attempted to change due to her love for her son.
The Beast/Crocodile

Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) — AKA Rumplestiltskin/the Crocodile/Beast/Dark One — and the son of Peter Pan) has been Once Upon a Time's go-to villain for many of the iconic roles. While Gold's Croc was responsible for Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) losing his hand, and Rumple trained many of the show's villains — including Regina (Lana Parrilla) and Zelena (Rebecca Mader) — there was at times a balance between his darkness and his Beast-esque love for Belle (Emilie de Ravin), and his genuine love for his son, Bae. His father was also Peter Pan (Robbie Kay), whom in Once Upon a Time was evil.
Belle

Belle appeared in the 1991 film, Beauty and the Beast. Like the film's character, Once Upon a Time's Belle (Emilie de Ravin) went to live with a "beast" (Robert Carlyle) to protect her father, and ultimately ended up falling for the man, despite his appearance. On the series, Rumple grew paranoid that Belle was working against her, and threw her out, leading to the duo being separated when Regina's (Lana Parrilla) spell transported them to Storybrooke. The two eventually got married, but his inability to be honest with drove Belle to banish him from Storybrooke.
Captain Hook

Captain Hook appeared in the 1953 film, Peter Pan, as the title character's main foe. While the Once Upon a Time character had a tense relationship with Pan (Robbie Kay), Hook's main antagonist was Rumple (Robert Carlyle), AKA the Croc. Hook seduced Rumple's wife, Milah, and Rumple retaliated by cutting off Hook's hand and killing Milah. In Storybrooke, Rumple took control of Hook by stealing his heart (literally). Hook has also started a relationship with Emma (Jennifer Morrison).
Robin Hood and Maid Marian.

Robin Hood and Maid Marian appeared in the 1973 film, Robin Hood. The biggest initial difference between the Once Upon a Time characters and their film version? The OUAT Robin (Sean Maguire) was not a fox. On the ABC series, Robin shared a lot of the characteristics with his animated counterpart, but though Robin married (and had a child) with Maid Marian (Christie Laing), he has since fallen in love with Regina (Lana Parrilla).
The Knave of Hearts

The Knave of Hearts appeared in the 2010 film, Alice in Wonderland. On television, his story started on Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, where, post-heartbreak, Will (Michael Socha) became the Knave of Hearts in the Queen of Hearts' (Barbara Hershey) army. While helping Alice (Sophie Lowe) and her love, Cyrus (Peter Gadiot), he rekindled his relationship with Ana/Red Queen (Emma Rigby), but it was temporary.
Elsa

Elsa appeared in the 2013 film, Frozen. Rather than rewriting her tale on Once Upon a Time, the writers continued Elsa's (Georgina Haig) story, as it was revealed that her parents were actually killed in pursuit of a cure to help Elsa's powers. After Anna (Elizabeth Lail) — under the influence of a spell — placed Elsa in an urn, Elsa ended up in Storybrooke desperate to find her sister. She helped the town — including her new friend, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) — defeat the Snow Queen (Elizabeth Mitchell), who was also Elsa's aunt/Emma's former foster mother.
Anna

Anna appeared in the 2013 film, Frozen. After the events of the movie, Anna (Elizabeth Lail) opted to postpone her wedding in order to finish her parents' mission to help Elsa (Georgina Haig). The girls' aunt, Ingrid (Elizabeth Mitchell), AKA the Snow Queen, puts Anna under the Spell of Shattered Sight, which led to Elsa becoming imprisoned in an urn. Ingrid froze Anna and the entire town as payback, and post-thaw, Hans (Tyler Jacob Moore) threw Anna and Kristoff (Scott Michael Foster) in a trunk in the ocean. Elsa used a locator spell to find her sister, and the women were reunited and went back home to Arendelle.
Maleficent

Maleficent appeared in the 1959 film, Sleeping Beauty as the main villain. Like her film counterpart, the Once Upon a Time Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten) can transform into a dragon, though her story on the ABC series has moved her past her issues with Sleeping Beauty. Maleficent and Regina (Lana Parrilla) were friends, though Regina kept her trapped in tunnels post-curse. She will be a part of the "Queens of Darkness" arc.
Cruella De Vil

Cruella De Vil appeared in the 1961 film, One Hundred and One Dalmations. On the ABC drama, Cruella (Victoria Smurfit) appeared as one of the Queens of Darkness, and she worked with Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Ursula (Merrin Dungey) to kidnap Belle (Emilie de Ravin) in order blackmail Rumple (Robert Carlyle).
Ursula

Ursula appeared in the 1989 film, The Little Mermaid. On Once Upon a Time, Ursula (Merrin Dungey) will appear as a part of the Queens of Darkness. Back in the Fairy Tale Land, Regina (Lana Parrilla) impersonated Ursula to trick Ariel (Joanna Garcia Swisher), which angered Ursula. Post-curse, Ursula worked in New York in an aquarium, where she was approached by Rumple (Robert Carlyle) with an offer to join his team to get their happy endings.
Peter Pan

Peter Pan appeared in the 1953 film, Peter Pan. Unlike the Disney film, the Once Upon a Time Pan (Robbie Kay) was dark — he was Rumple's (Robert Carlyle) father (and abandoned his son), befriended Henry (Jared Gilmore) under false circumstances, and blackmailed the Darling chlidren to do his bidding, before Rumple eventually killed him (and sacrificed himself in the meantime).
August/Pinocchio and Geppetto

Pinocchio and Geppetto appeared in the 1940 film, Pinocchio. Like the Disney film, the Once Upon a Time character was a puppet that turned into a real boy, but on the ABC series, Geppetto (Tony Amendola) sent Pinocchio with baby Emma in an enchanted wardrobe to escape Regina's curse. As an adult — and going by August (Eion Bailey) — he watched over Emma (Jennifer Morrison) to make sure she'd fulfill her eventual destiny of saving Storybrooke, though he was turning back into wood…a result of not staying selfless, brave, and true. After he sacrificed himself in an attempt to warn Emma about an evil in Storybrooke, the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) turned him back into a child.
Jiminy Cricket

Jiminy Cricket appeared in the 1940 film, Pinocchio. Like the Disney character, Once Upon a Time's Jiminy (Raphael Sbarge) was, for a time a cricket. On the ABC drama, he became a cricket as penance for accidentally turning a couple into puppets — a move that couldn't be undone — and wound up counseling a young Geppetto. Post-curse, Jiminy became Dr. Archie Hopper — the town's therapist.
The Huntsman

The Huntsman appeared in the 1937 film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Like the film, the Once Upon a Time Huntsman (Jamie Dornan) worked for the Evil Queen (Lana Parilla), but on the ABC drama, the two were also in a relationship in a cursed Storybrooke. But when he broke things off with Regina to start a relationship with Emma (Jennifer Morrison), Regina crushed his heart.
Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter appeared in the 1951 movie, Alice in Wonderland. But while the film's version of the Mad Hatter was comical and relished in his madness, Once Upon a Time's Mad Hatter (Sebastian Stan) gained his nickname when he was unable to replicate his magical hat which allowed him to travel between worlds…and went a bit crazy after making thousands in an attempt to find a way back to his daughter. After the curse was lifted in Storybrooke, he was able to reunite with his daughter.
Ariel

Ariel appeared in the 1989 film, The Little Mermaid. Like the film version, Once Upon a Time's Ariel (Joanna Garcia Swisher) was a mermaid, but she had the ability to use legs for short periods of time. Ariel befriended Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), and when the duo went to a ball, Ariel officially met Eric (Gil McKinney), whom Ariel had previously saved. But when Ariel attempted to save Snow from the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), Ariel lost her ability to speak. After the curse was broken — and with some help from Regina — Ariel reunited with Eric in Storybrooke.
Magic Mirror/Genie

Once Upon a Time's Sidney Glass (Giancarlo Esposito) was a hybrid of two Disney characters: the Genie from the 1992 film, Aladdin, and the Magic Mirror from the 1937 film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In the Fairy Tale Land, he started off as a the Genie, but when he discovered that his love for the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) was not returned, he used his final wish to remain close to her — and wound up as her mirror. In Storybrooke, Glass worked for Regina under the guise of being a reporter, and though Regina trapped him in a mirror again in an attempt to do her bidding, he was eventually released by the Snow Queen (Elizabeth Mitchell).
The Queen of Hearts

The Queen of Hearts appeared in the 1951 movie, Alice in Wonderland. While — like the film version — Cora (Barbara Hershey) would go on to become the Queen of Hearts, her life pre-Wonderland was complicated: Cora gave birth to Zelena (whom she abandoned) and Regina (whom she kept). Cora also started a relationship with Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle); after she claimed to a king that she could turn straw into gold, Rumple offered to teach her magic if she gave him her first child. Cora also killed Regina's (Lana Parrilla) first love, which set Regina on the path to becoming the Evil Queen. Post-curse, Cora encouraged Regina to embrace her evil ways, and the two bonded — until Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) cursed Cora with the same death Cora inflicted on Snow's mother.
Princess Aurora/Prince Phillip

Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip appeared in the 1959 film, Sleeping Beauty. Like the film, Once Upon a Time's Aurora (Sarah Bolger) was placed under a sleeping spell by Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten). However, in the ABC drama version, when Phillip (Julian Morris) came to save her, he was also accompanied by Mulan (Jamie Chung)…and Philip's soul was sucked from his body by a wraith. Aurora and Mulan went on a quest to retrieve Phillip's soul, and when it's restored, he and Aurora reconcile and have a child.
Mulan

Mulan appeared in the 1998 film, Mulan. Much like the film version, Once Upon a Time's Mulan (Jamie Chung) was also a warrior. But for the television Mulan, she travelled with Prince Phillip (Julian Morris) to rescue Aurora (Sarah Bolger), only to have Phillip's soul be stolen by a wraith. Aurora and Mulan worked together to find a way to save Phillip, and were successful — though Mulan's feelings for Aurora had grown, and Mulan was heartbroken when she learned Phillip and Aurora were having a baby. Upon that news, Mulan opted to join Robin Hood's (Sean Maguire) Merry Men.
Cinderella

Cinderella appeared in the 1950 film, Cinderella. Unlike the film,Once Upon a Time's Cinderella (Jessy Schram) wasn't bestowed with a miserable family; instead, she was a maid — with a fairy godmother — who wanted to attend the royal ball. Instead of getting to make the wish to her godmother, she struck a deal with Rumple (Robert Carlyle) to go to the ball if he could have what he wanted in the future. After Cinderella and the prince fell in love and got married, Rumple requested her child, which Cinderella refused. In a cursed Storybrooke, Cinderella (AKA Ashley) connected with her prince (AKA Sean) despite them not having memories of their time in Fairy Tale Land.
The Blue Fairy

The Blue Fairy appeared in the 1940 film, Pinocchio. Like the film, Once Upon a Time's Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) brought Pinocchio to life. She was also was the one who suggested baby Emma be put in the magical wardrobe to be spared from Regina's (Lana Parilla) curse.
Tinker Bell

Tinker Bell appeared in the 1953 film, Peter Pan. While Tinker Bell was Pan's friend in the movie, their paths on Once Upon a Time rarely crossed — instead, Tinker Bell (Rose McIver) trained under the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy), but fell out of the fairies' good graces after helping Regina (Lana Parrilla). Tinker Bell was able to redeem herself when she killed Pan's shadow, which in turn saved the Blue Fairy.
Rapunzel

Rapunzel appeared in the 2010 film, Tangled. The Once Upon a Time tale took a different route with Rapunzel (Alexandra Metz) — instead of the woman being trapped in the tower by someone else, she took a plant with the intent of removing her fears, but instead it magnified things: it made Rapunzel think she was being trapped by someone, though her "captor" was a version of herself. Charming's (Josh Dallas) quest for the same root led to him helping her gain her awareness and subsequent freedom.
Merida

Merida appeared in the 2012 film Brave. On Once Upon a Time, played by Amy Manson, she was taught to fight by Mulan (Jamie Chung) and worked with her and Ruby (Meghan Ory) to discover that King Arthur (Liam Garrigan) killed her father, King Fergus. After she earned the clansmen’s trust and saved her kidnapped brothers, she was crowned queen of DunBroch. When she later went to seek revenge on Arthur, she was swept into Storybrooke, controlled by Dark Emma (Jennifer Morrison), and forced to train Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) on how to be brave.
Merlin

Merlin (Elliot Knight), the sorcerer from 1963 adaptation The Sword in the Stone, was betrayed by his lover, Nimue (Caroline Ford), who became the first Dark One and later turned Merlin into a tree. Years later, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Regina (Lana Parrilla) were able to free him in Camelot and he tried to help Emma overcome her darkness. However, after King Arthur (Liam Garrigan) stabbed Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) with Excalibur and got an un-healable wound, Emma used her dark magic to save Hook and tether her boyfriend to the sword, turning him into a Dark One. Because of that, Hook later killed Merlin, ripping out his heart because that is what original Dark One Nimue wanted.
King Arthur

The Sword in the Stone’s Arthur (Liam Garrigan) was told by Merlin (Elliot Knight) that he would one day pull Excalibur from the stone, but when Arthur finally did, the sword was missing the tip. His quest to find the missing part messed up his relationship with his wife Guinevere (Joana Metrass) until he blew magical powder on her to forget their troubles. After the Storybrooke folks came to Camelot, he used and betrayed them — mostly David (Josh Dallas) — and that continued once Emma’s (Jennifer Morrison) Dark One curse erased their memories and brought them all back to Storybrooke. He also killed Merida’s (Amy Manson) father and worked with Zelena (Rebecca Mader).
Guinevere

Guinevere (Joana Metrass) is also from The Sword in the Stone. Her main role on Once Upon a Time was as Arthur’s wife, but she also had a brief affair with knight Lancelot (Sinqua Walls). She worked alongside Arthur in Camelot and Storybrooke to try to defeat Merlin (Elliot Knight) and reunite the Dark One dagger with the sword so Excalibur could be whole again.
