Bryan Adams, who moonlights as an in-demand photographer, shot Winehouse on at least four occasions. This particular session was for I-D Magazine's June 2008 "Hot Beaches" issue, which featured Mariah Carey on the cover.
When it comes to photographing rock stars, Adams, himself a Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, says mugging for the camera doesn't necessarily come naturally. "There's an incredible awkwardness that most musicians have," he told The Hollywood Reporter in March. "They're so bad at posing that it's laughable."
Producer Saalem Remi, who compiled and completed much of the material used on Lioness: Hidden Treasures, says he and Winehouse often worked without a proper studio. "I'd be sitting in a villa and hear what sounds like a bird flying by," he recalls, "then I'd look out the window and it's Amy, singing in her falsetto just playing around."
Winehouse was among the lesser known stars featured in the I.D. Magazine spread. Her cover line: "Sex on the Beach with Amy Winehouse."
Adams wrote of the December 2007 shoot on his photography site: "I love Amy Winehouse's second album and love her style. Pin up style but covered in tattoos. It's totally unique and I cant wait for her to get back to the top of her game."
"She was inspired by Donny Hathaway, Billie Holliday, many different artists that came and passed way before she was born," Lioness producer Remi tells THR.
Proceeds from sales of Lioness: Hidden Treasures will benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a charity created by her father Mitch whose aim is to “bring healthier and happier lives to young people.”
