John Legend played the piano while singing "America the Beautiful."
The Oscar-nominated performer sang a soulful rendition to Super Bowl XLIX-goers.
Katy Perry kicked off her halftime show with "Roar," sung while atop a massive metallic lion with red eyes.
At the end of the song, the lion reared up on its hind legs and roared loudly.
She followed it up with "Dark Horse" as dancers dressed as metallic chess pieces traveled a makeshift grid.
And, as promised, there were plenty of flames on her first dress.
Her first guest performer of her 12-minute-plus set was Lenny Kravitz.
He briefly joined her onstage in a leather jacket and chainmail-style tank for a head-banging rendition of her breakout track, "I Kissed a Girl."
The stage then transformed into a cartoon beach with dancing palm trees, beach balls, waves and sharks (complete with clouds around the top of the arena).
Perry emerged in a retro, beach ball-inspired skirt and bustier for "Teenage Dream."
She also sang "California Gurls" — free of any cupcakes.
Perry's other guest was Missy Elliott — whose name was kept under wraps but was previously teased as an "old-school" female singer who, upon appearing, "I think jaws will drop and faces will melt."
The rapper came out stomping for "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It," with Perry rapping along to the choruses.
Elliott closed her section with "Lose Control."
Donning a star-covered gown, Perry closed her halftime show by flying across the arena as part of a shooting star during "Firework," as fireworks launched from atop the arena.
"Thank you! God bless America!" she shouted at the end. Watch her full performance here.
