The singer (with the fest's co-founder) told USA Today The Union "was Cameron Crowe's idea. When he found out I was doing a record with Leon and was trying to resurrect my own idol he said 'How lovely I want to be there to document it.' I said of course because Cameron's a friend of mine and here we are two years later." After the doc screen, the stage legend belted out a slew of hits, including "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," "The Union," "You're Never Too Old to Hold Somebody," "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues" and "Your Song."
The two, who are jurors for this year's festival, were among those who attended the world premiere of The Union.
The acclaimed director brought the Palestinian author to The Union screening. She wrote the book Miral, on which his latest film is based.
The director (with a guest) is one of the jurors for the 2011 Narrative Short Film Competition.
The two founded the festival in 2001 following the World Trade Center attacks.
She walked the red carpet to show her support for husband Robert DeNiro, who helped found the fest.
She was among the bold-faced names at The Union screening.
At The Union screening, Tribeca Film Festival juror Zoe Kravitz said her favorite Elton John tune is "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."
