It might be the end of the world as we know it.

With no advance warning, the end of the world has arrived — or, at least, that's the implication from the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a surprise follow-up to the J.J. Abrams-produced monster movie from 2008.

The trailer, released late on Thursday, features John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher, Jr. in scenes of what appear to be suburban bliss … for awhile. As things fall apart, it quickly becomes apparent that something very bad has happened to the rest of the world (and to Winstead's character herself, for that matter), but it's not clear what.

Despite the title, it's also not clear whether 10 Cloverfield Lane is a full sequel to Cloverfield, the equally secretive movie from Matt Reeves that saw a kaiju-esque monster rampage through New York City. Abrams — who also produces the new feature — has been quoted describing the movie as "a blood relative" of the earlier feature, but stops short of calling it an official sequel.

The movie is directed by Dan Trachtenberg from a screenplay by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken, and will be released on March 11. Expect the mystery to continue until then.
