Judi Dench Introduces Underground World in 'Artemis Fowl' Teaser Trailer
Walt Disney Studios released the first teaser trailer for Artemis Fowl on Tuesday.
Based on the Eoin Colfer novel of the same name, Artemis Fowl follows the 12-year-old titular character (Ferdia Shaw), a descendent of criminals, as he battles a hidden race of fairies who may be responsible for the disappearance of his father.
Kenneth Branagh directed the film, while Lara McDonnell, Hong Chau, Nonso Anozie, Josh Gad, Judi Dench and Miranda Raison round out the cast.
The trailer opens with shots of nature, tall buildings and traffic as a narrator states that the world is in danger. "Human greed is what drove us underground all those years ago," says Commander Root (Dench) in a voiceover.
The setting then transitions to an underground world of fairies, trolls and goblins. The narrator addresses Artemis and warns him that he is not prepared from his upcoming battle against the fairies. Artemis and his bodyguard (Anozie) eventually meet a woman who floats into the air.
A montage of clips follows that preview Artemis and his bodyguard using weapons to defeat the fairies.
Harvey Weinstein was originally attached to produce the film, though he was removed from the project following The New York Times and New Yorker reports about his alleged sexual misconduct.
The disgraced producer originally picked up the rights to the novel in the early 2000s while he worked as the head of Miramax. Disney reacquired the rights and attached Weinstein as a producer in 2013. Following Weinstein's departure from the film, Branagh became a producer, along with Judy Hofflund. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal serve as executive producers.
Artemis Fowl will be in theaters Aug. 9.
