'Asteroids' Getting Rewrite From 'Autobahn' Writer (Exclusive)

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing the big-screen take on the Atari video game.

F. Scott Frazier has been hired to rewrite Universal’s big-screen take on Asteroids, the action-adventure project based on the popular 1979 Atari arcade video game.

Universal has been developing the project since 2009, when it won a bidding war for the movie rights to the game — which famously featured a spaceship in an asteroid field.

Matt Lopez, Evan Spiliotopoulos and Jez Butterworth were previously the writers in the path of hurtling rock masses (aka studio notes) and wrote earlier drafts.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing, and Mark Vahradian is executive producing.

Frazier co-wrote Autobahn, the racing action-thriller starring Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones that Relativity will release Oct. 30. His Black List script Berliner was acquired by Universal last year; Chris Morgan and Chris Cowles are producing, and Chris Fenton is executive producing that film.

He is repped by CAA, DMG Entertainment and McKuin Frankel.

Universal’s vp production, Anikah McLaren, and director of development, Jay Polidoro, are overseeing.
