Just who is the superteam avenging, anyway?

Just who is the superteam avenging, anyway?

Audiences have the opportunity to see what the remaining Avengers get up to in Avengers: Endgame, but what about those they’re avenging?

More than a dozen major characters died in last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, and it’s worth brushing up on just what happened to them before heading into the final chapter. In case you don’t have time to rewatch 149 minutes worth of Infinity War, however, here’s a cheat sheet.

To start, let's take a look at the most heartbreaking death in Infinity War, that of Spider-Man.

Spider-Man

Who? Peter Parker, the youngest and most friendly neighborhood of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: On Titan, with Iron Man, Doctor Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy, having just failed to defeat Thanos and steal the Infinity Gauntlet from him. Oh, and they were stranded, too. No wonder he wasn’t feeling so good.
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

And here are the other heroes you need to remember.

Black Panther

Who? T’Challa, ruler of the nation of Wakanda and the most noble of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: In Wakanda, in the midst of a massive battle between the Chitauri hordes of Thanos and the remaining heroes on Earth. His kingdom was falling around him, just after he had announced plans for it to become part of the international community at the end of Black Panther.

The Vision

Who? Far more than a robot, the Vision is an artificial intelligence powered by an Infinity Stone. He’s also the most worthy of all the MCU heroes, judging by how easily he could lift Thor’s hammer in Age of Ultron.
Where They Were Before the Snap: The Vision, too, was in Wakanda, ostensibly to see if the Mind Stone could be separated from him without killing him. (That didn’t come to much, considering.) In the grander scheme of things, he was in the midst of a relationship with the Scarlet Witch, despite the fact that he was an Avenger and she was on the run from authorities in the wake of Captain America: Civil War.
How They Died: Killed when Thanos pulled the Mind Stone from his head, just after being resurrected by Thanos after being killed by the Scarlet Witch. Rough day.

The Scarlet Witch

Who? Wanda Maximoff, the telekinetic and telepathic manipulatrix who turned from misguided villain to hero upon realizing that the Avengers were actually the good guys. Maybe the most powerful of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: In Wakanda, having just killed the Vision only to watch him come back to life and be killed again by Thanos; beyond that, she and the Vision were in a relationship with each other that could be described as star-crossed, if that term meant “on different sides of an ideological and legal division because of events in an earlier movie.”
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

The Falcon

Who? Sam Wilson, former PTSD counselor turned high-flying superhero, and the most level-headed of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: In Wakanda with the remaining heroes of the Earth, facing off against the Children of Thanos, and then Thanos himself. Before that, he had spent an unspecified time as part of Steve Rogers’ Secret Avengers, working in the shadows to keep people safe while on the run from authorities following escape from custody at the end of Captain America: Civil War.
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

The Winter Soldier/The White Wolf

Who? Bucky Barnes, all-American soldier turned brainwashed cyborg assassin, but trying to get over that now. The most conflicted of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: In Wakanda, once more fighting alongside Captain America (and everyone else) against the forces of Thanos. Prior to that, he had been living in Wakanda and undergoing therapy to recover from the programming he underwent as part of the Winter Soldier brainwashing.
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

Doctor Strange

Who? Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme.
Where They Were Before the Snap: On Titan, attempting to stop Thanos. After using the Time Stone to discover that the only way the heroes would win is of Tony Stark survives, he willingly gives it to Thanos in exchange for Stark's life.
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

Star-Lord

Who? Peter Quill, half-human and half-Celestial, all a-hole. The most self-conscious of all the MCU heroes, and that’s a pretty contested title.
Where They Were Before the Snap: On Titan, alongside the rest of the Guardians, as well as Spider-Man, Iron Man and Doctor Strange. Not only had he arguably ruined the plan to defeat Thanos before it was too late, he had also just learned that Gamora had been killed, so he definitely wasn’t in a good place. (Emotionally, I mean; but also literally.)
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

Drax

Who? A former criminal who lived for revenge upon Ronan the Accuser, and later Thanos, whom he blamed for the death of his family. The most easily amused of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: On Titan, stranded alongside the rest of the Guardians, with Doctor Strange, Iron Man and Spider-Man after failing to defeat Thanos, his life’s mission.
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

Groot

Who? A talking tree, although he doesn’t say that much. Blessed with both a big heart and an ability to, essentially, shape-shift as long as you’re looking for something made out of wood. The most monosyllabic of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: In Wakanda, alongside the heroes of Earth, fighting Thanos’ alien army, having just transported from Nidavellir, where he sacrificed his arm so that it could become the handle for Thor’s new hammer, Stormbreaker. Don’t worry; it grew back. Although he did turn to dust almost immediately afterward, so perhaps worrying is justified.
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

Gamora

Who? A deadly assassin trained by Thanos after he murdered half of her race — including her family — who is also the most deadly of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: Having tried to become a better person with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora failed in what may have been her ultimate purpose: Hiding the Soul Stone from Thanos, and thereby preventing others from having to suffer what she had, years before. For a brief second, her disbelief that Thanos truly cared for her gave her false hope, but sadly, the truth of the matter was more tragic.
How They Died: Killed by Thanos on the planet Vormir, his sacrifice to earn the Soul Stone.

Mantis

Who? A relative newcomer to events, Mantis is an empathic alien who can also subtly manipulate emotion through touch. The most emotional of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: On Titan, recovering from what was an almost successful attempt to separate Thanos from the Infinity Gauntlet alongside the other Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man. It was all Star-Lord’s fault, though.
How They Died: Snapped out of existence.

Shuri

Who? Little sister to the Black Panther, and the most intelligent of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: In Wakanda, but — unlike almost every other character at the time — not fighting Thanos’ army. Instead, Shuri was working to try and separate the Mind Stone from the Vision, when interrupted by one of Thanos’ soldiers. What caused her death is unclear, but either way, it’s an unfortunate end for a woman who had, just earlier, proven herself to be the scientific superior of both Bruce Banner and Tony Stark by suggesting solutions neither had considered.
How They Died: It’s not entirely clear; either she was killed in defending the Vision, or she was snapped out of existence.

Loki

Who? Half-brother to Thor, perpetual trickster and the most untrustworthy of all the MCU heroes — if you could really call him a hero in the first place.
Where They Were Before the Snap: Following the destruction of Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok, Loki was on board a spacecraft with the remaining Asgardians, searching for a new home when interrupted by Thanos and his Children. This was a problem, in that they were looking for the Tesseract, which he had secretly stolen before Asgard was destroyed. Oh, and also in that they were willing to kill everyone to get it.
How They Died: Killed by Thanos in space, in front of Thor.

Nick Fury

Who? The man behind the Avengers, from conception on forward. The most shadowy of all the MCU heroes.
Where They Were Before the Snap: Driving through a city, probably up to whatever secret spy business he’s been up to since SHIELD disbanded. (Seriously, though, what has Nick Fury been up to since SHIELD disbanded at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier? We saw him basically be director of SHIELD in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but other than that, where has he been?)
