'Avengers' Villain Ultron Is 'A Very Powerful, Smart Child,' Says James Spader
As the newly-released trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron makes clear, Marvel Studios’ latest bad guy is a terrifying, armor-crushing robotic monster. But, to hear James Spader — who provides the voice for the character — tell it, we’re simply not seeing Ultron’s good side just yet.
“In many ways he's a child, this character, because he's a brand new being who's just come to be,” the actor told Total Film Magazine about the eponymous bad guy. “And yet, through artificial intelligence, he has an incredible capacity for knowledge. So he's a very powerful, smart child.”
We can also add ‘funny’ to his list of descriptors, Spader suggests. “There’s a humorous aspect to him, which is something that drew me in from the very first conversation I had with [writer and director Joss Whedon],” he said. Comparing Ultron with his character from the NBC show The Blacklist, Spader suggested, “Ultron takes abrupt turns in scenes. Red [Reddington] isn't psychopathic but Ultron is. Yes, he is psychopathic. He's really batshit crazy!”
Well, at least now we might have an idea about why he was singing songs from Pinocchio while apparently trying to eradicate the human race in that trailer. Tony Stark, what have you built…?
