As Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters this April, Marvel Entertainment plans to reveal more of the backstory between Thanos and his adoptive daughter with a new Thanos comic book miniseries set during Gamora’s childhood.

In Marvel’s comic book continuity, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gamora was raised by Thanos after the slaughter of her entire race. However, there’s one crucial difference: the comic book version of Gamora wasn’t being raised by the person responsible for their deaths. Instead, Thanos was raising her with the promise that he would help her avenge their deaths by slaughtering the Badoon, the alien race that had killed Gamora’s people. That doesn’t mean that their relationship was a comfortable one though.

"When I put some thought into what Thanos and Gamora's early relationship would have been like in an interpersonal sense, not the thousand-yard-overview we get in the old books, I go back to True Grit," writer Tini Howard told Marvel.com about the new series. "Or I think of team-ups like Sandor Clegane and Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, you know? These classic duos where nothing threatens the big bad guy — except for a kid. And it's not because kids are cute and vulnerable, it's because they're honest. And they don't have a full understanding of the world around them yet, so they're somewhat unaware of nuance and danger."

Howard, whose previous works include Oni Press' Rick and Morty and IDW/Black Crown's Assassinistas and Euthanauts, will be joined on the series by artist Ariel Olivetti.

Thanos will launch in April. Avengers: Endgame will be released April 26.
