'Betrothed' Is the Anti-Teen Romance Drama You Didn't Know You Wanted (Exclusive)
Playwright Sean Lewis has the perfect hook for his new AfterShock Comics title, Betrothed. His pitch for the teen drama turned inter-dimensional sci-fi actioneer? “Riverdale meets Star Wars.”
The new series, which launches in March and features artwork from Uncanny X-Men and Avengers: The Initiative veteran Steve Uy, follows two teenagers who discover that they’re not exactly who they thought they were just ahead of their 18th birthdays.
“Kieron and Tamara discover that in a parallel universe they are the heirs of two warring families,” Lewis explained to Heat Vision. “Even better, to ensure peace, the two teens have been betrothed to one another. Problem is, these teenagers want no part of it.” According to the writer, Betrothed combines magic, sci-fi and teen angst for an everyday story about “what it is to save the world during that time in your life when it feels the world is ending.”
Lewis was effusive in his praise for collaborator Uy. “Steve is great. I knew I wanted a slight manga influence on the book — there's a humor and personality that comes in that style, and Steve's work just nailed it while still being in line with the Marvel work he'd done,” he said. “He really can convey humor, bad-ass action and pathos to an impressive degree.”
Betrothed’s debut issue will be available in comic stores and digitally March 14.
