Black Friday's Best Comic Book Deals
So it's Black Friday, and the urge to spend is strong. But it's possible to save yourself from the savage struggle of the physical stores and exercise your purchasing power online, with digital comics platform ComiXology hosting a number of publisher-specific sales across the holiday weekend to offer entertainment from the comfort of your own mobile device. Here's a quick guide to what's on offer, and where.
Heat Vision breakdown
Marvel has two separate sales running through Nov. 27, and combined they offer a good primer on the company's superhero comic output over the last year. The Secret Wars Sale makes every issue of last year's reality-twisting mega-event storyline (including tie-in miniseries) just 99 cents, while the All-New, All-Different Collections Sale drops the price of collected editions for the first post-Secret Wars relaunches from last year, giving you a chance to sample the Marvel Universe as-was right before the current Marvel NOW! relaunch. Confused? You should be, but don't let that stop you from picking up Ultimates: Omniversal, Vision or any of the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl collections, all of which are highly recommended.
For those looking to get their heads around where Marvel's primary competitor is these days, in terms of comic output, this might be the time to check it out. Running through Nov. 28, DC is having a buy-one-get-one sale for its initial Rebirth titles — specifically, any first issue and/or Rebirth-branded special issue, which means that those who haven't sampled Green Arrow, New Super-Man, The Flash, Batgirl or Supergirl have an opportunity to get onboard. Also included in the sale will be select collected editions, graphic novels and Vertigo-branded single issues, which gives me a chance to say: Unfollow and The Sheriff of Babylon are well worth your time and attention, people.
Image's Black Friday Week sale, which runs through Nov. 28, is a doozy, with multiple collected editions being offered at significantly reduced prices. It's an embarrassment of riches, with so many amazing titles on offer that making recommendations are difficult. That said, Saga, The Wicked + The Divine, Southern Bastards and Monstress are titles that won't steer you wrong, while things like The Fix, Sexcastle and Autumnlands offer fun outside the comic book norm and should be investigated by those looking for something new. Overall, though, there's so much on offer in this lineup, it could eat up your entire Black Friday and then some.
Both IDW and Aftershock have extensive digital sales running through the weekend, with IDW offering a number of titles based on licensed properties like The X-Files, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future and Godzilla, while Aftershock offers a number of all-original series and concepts. Of the latter, check out Captain Kid and Animosity, for sure.
