'BoJack Horseman' Designer Lisa Hanawalt Cuts Loose in New Book (Exclusive Preview)

HotDog Top Cartoon H 2016
Lisa Hanawalt
'Hot Dog Taste Test' collects work done for 'Lucky Peach' as well as previously unseen material, like this diary of a family trip to Argentina.

Even if the name isn't familiar, chances are many people are fans of Lisa Hanawalt's work; in addition to creating work for The New York Times, Vanity Fair and McSweeney's, the award-winning cartoonist is also a designer and producer on the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman.

Audiences will be able to get a more concentrated dose of Hanawalt's work in her new book Hot Dog Taste Test, which hits stores Wednesday. For those who can't wait that long, The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive excerpt below.

Collecting her work from food magazine Lucky Peach (including a wonderful visit to Wylie Dufresne's WD-50 restaurant; "There are tons of ingredients on the wall and I have no idea what any of them are," she writes. "None of them seem edible") as well as all-new material, Taste Test mixes reportage, surrealism and an irrational love of anthropomorphized animals for a book that's hilarious, touching and surprisingly educational. Where else could you find the definition of the fictional photography terms "gringe" and "boont"?

Hot Dog Taste Test is released June 15 by Drawn & Quarterly. Below, the opening pages of Hanawalt's memoir of her trip to Argentina.
