Four new projects are unveiled by the L.A.-based independent publisher.

In the run-up to San Diego Comic-Con, Boom! Studios has spent the week (sans July 4, obviously) unveiling upcoming projects daily, from all-new graphic novels to the return of fan-favorite properties.

Of the four announcements this week, the most high-profile is likely a comic book revival for Firefly, the cult Joss Whedon television series celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Overseen by Whedon, the new comic book series by Greg Pak and Dan McDaid will tell the story — unseen in both the original TV series and subsequent Serenity movie follow-up — of the Unification War that acted as a backdrop to the characters and the universe they exist in.

“It’s high time we got to see the full story of Mal and Zoe’s meeting and mission in the War of Unification — the good and bad that the pressure of war brings out in them, and the unforeseeable consequences,” Whedon said in a statement from the publisher. “Greg Pak and Dan McDaid are bringing a unique voice to the world of Firefly. It’s an important story for any dedicated Browncoat to read, but more importantly, it’s a big gorram adventure.”

Alongside Firefly No. 1, when it’s released digitally and in comic book stores Nov. 14, will be Firefly: Legacy Edition Book One, collecting the first comic book stories based on the universe, as originally published by Dark Horse Comics.

Also making a return will be James Tynion IV and Rian Sygh’s young adult series The Backstagers, which continues with October’s The Backstagers Halloween Intermission, a one-shot special issue by Tynion, Sygh, Sam Johns, Shan Murphy, Abby Howard and Savanna Ganucheau. “The Halloween Intermission issue lets us expand the spookiest mythology behind the St. Genesius theater, to tell a genuinely frightening story that captures the heart and soul of the book and these sweet boys,” Tynion said of the issue, which will feature a main story centering on Sasha, with back-ups focusing on the other characters.

Accompanying Firefly and The Backstagers are two brand-new projects: Pandora’s Legacy, a graphic novel about a family trying to collect the many monsters they accidentally released from a mystical jar, by Kara Leopard and Kelly & Nichole Matthews, and the five-issue Sparrowhawk, written by fantasy writer Delilah S. Dawson, with art by Matias Basla, which Dawson describes as “one part Labyrinth, another part Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty.” Those projects will be released in November and October, respectively.

Boom! is planning six more announcements before San Diego Comic-Con, according to the publisher; the convention runs July 19-22 at the San Diego Convention Center, with the annual Preview Night taking place July 18.
