'Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War' Footage Drops at Gamescom

Raven Software's Dan Vondrak explained that the game drops players into the 1980s with familiar characters from the previous game.

Annual video game trade fair Gamescom kicked off with its opening night live event on Thursday, with news and previews from over 30 games.

"Games have comforted and connected us more than ever," said Geoff Keighley, host of the Gamescom Opening Night Live event. He noted that there would be a first look at Fall Guys season 2 and extended gameplay of Ratchet and Clank for PS5 during the presentation.

But first up was Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Raven Software's Dan Vondrak said of the game, "This has been a dream project for us to work on." He explained that the game drops players into 1980s at the height of the Cold War with familiar faces, including iconic characters, Woods, Hudson and Mason.

The campaign takes place in 1981 as a direct sequel to Black Ops. Vondrak said the game will be "infused with player choices and freedom," such as the option for users can create their own character for the cold war campaign, including their own military background.

There will also be multiple endings to the game. "That was one of the big things for us," said Vondrak.

Elsewhere during the presentation, there was a look at DOOM Eternal's first campaign expansion, The Ancient Gods, as well as the new game Teardown from Tuxedo Labs and a first look at Little Nightmares 2 from Bandai Namco Entertainment, which won best Nintendo Switch game at Gamescom, Europe's largest video game trade fair, on Thursday.
