The 'Hobbit' and 'Sherlock' star will be appearing in the 2016 superhero movie.

Captain America: Civil War's cast continues to grow, with Marvel Studios announcing today that Martin Freeman will be appearing in the 2016 release.

The Hobbit and Sherlock actor will be playing an unnamed character in the follow-up to 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier alongside Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson. Like its predecessor, the movie, which currently is shooting, will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo ahead of their shift to Marvel's Avengers franchise with 2018's Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1.

In a statement from Marvel Studios, president Kevin Feige said that the actor's "range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," adding that the studio "couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Freeman's addition to the Marvel Studios family follows his Sherlock co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch, signing on to play Doctor Strange in the 2016 movie based on the character that also will be released in 2016.
