'Crowhurst' Trailer: Thriller From Simon Rumley Details Sea-Voyage Mystery
The story of Donald Crowhurst has captivated folks ever since the amateur sailor died while competing in an around-the-world yacht race sponsored by the Sunday Times.
The real-life story follows family man and businessman Crowhurst, who, once he realized he was dangerously in over his head while in the race, began reporting false positions and fabricating his logbook. His boat was eventually found adrift with evidence pointing to a mental breakdown and likely suicide.
Colin Firth took a more dramatic turn in the the recent (and more big-budget) movie The Mercy, which also chronicled Crowhurst. Now Crowhurst, directed by Simon Rumley (the director behind Red White & Blue and Fashionista), takes a more psychological horror indie-movie approach that is more arty, spare and hallucinatory.
The movie opens today in the U.K., with a U.S. release still to be determined. In an unusual move, StudioCanal was behind Mercy and is also quietly releasing Crowhurst, mainly because it was contractually obligated to when it bought the first movie in order to take a competing project off the table.
The company didn’t make a trailer, so the filmmaker and producers made one themselves.
