David Beckham Debuts Facial Scar for 'King Arthur' Role, Creates Stir on Social Media
On Tuesday, David Beckham debuted a new look on his Instagram, leaving his followers shocked and confused.
With a visible graphic scar covering the left side of his face and a mouthful of yellow teeth, the former soccer star looked drastically different from his usual physical appearance. Fans were quick to respond to the image, expressing concern over Beckham’s unrecognizable new look.
On his Instagram, fans left numerous comments pleading for the new look to be a fake.
One fan writes, “Please...no,” with other fans chiming in saying, “He's aging horribly,” “Is it fake ???” and “OMG What happened?”
But for those followers who read the caption more closely — “Rough day at the office @kingarthurmovie @guyritchie" — it became clear that the look is only temporary.
Some lighthearted reactions followed: “This is for a movie, if anyone is alarmed,” “Awesome special effects make-up” and “I love how nobody can read the caption.” A fan even jokingly commented on the look saying, “Finally I look better than @davidbeckham.”
In 2015, Beckham confirmed his cameo in director Guy Richie’s upcoming film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Although the two are known to be close friends, Beckham told The Times that he knows his role could receive some criticism, saying, “I am very aware that many sportsmen and other celebrities have turned their hand to acting and failed. I know that it is a tough profession, where you need a huge amount of skill and discipline, and I wouldn’t want to push myself forward too soon, without learning more about it, and doing a lot more practice.”
In 2015, Beckham made a small cameo in Richie’s film The Man From U.N.C.L.E. The athlete-turned-actor will appear as a grumpy knight alongside Sons of Anarchy alum Charlie Hunnam in the leading role. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is set to be released May 12.
