'Deadpool 2' Stunt Person Dies on Set; Police Investigating
A stunt person was killed on the set of Deadpool 2 on Monday, according to Vancouver Police.
"Vancouver Police can confirm that a female stunt driver has died on the set of Deadpool during a stunt on a motorcycle," police said in a statement.
Ryan Reynolds said in a statement the entire cast and crew were heartbroken over the loss.
"Today, we tragically lost a member of the crew while filming Deadpool. We're heartbroken, devastated… but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them -- along with each and every person she touched in this world," Reynolds said.
Director David Leitch also released a statement: “I’m deeply saddened by the loss of one of our stunt performers today. No words can express how I and the rest of the Deadpool 2 crew feel about this tragedy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loved ones in this difficult time.”
No additional information was immediately available on the circumstances of the accident.
"WorkSafeBC was contacted by the Vancouver Police Department this morning at 8:31 a.m. regarding a serious incident in the 1000 Block of West Waterfront Road, Van B.C. WorkSafeBC has five officers at the incident site," according to a statement from the statutory agency. "Two officers are inspecting the site for immediate occupational health and safety issues. Three officers are investigating the incident for cause and prevention under the Workers’ Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation."
SAG-AFTRA released a statement on Monday afternoon, promising to launch its own investigation. “We are all grieving the tragic death of a stunt performer on the Deadpool 2 set today. Our hearts and prayers are with her family, friends and fellow cast and crew members. The safety of our members and other production professionals on set is a core concern and top priority for SAG-AFTRA. Accordingly, we are sending a field representative to Vancouver and are investigating the incident.”
The British Columbia coroner's office is also investigating.
Reporters on the scene shared photos via social media of the area closed down by authorities.
Eyewitnesses told local news the stunt person did the scene four times perfectly, but on the fifth take the unidentified woman appeared to lose control of the bike and ran into a nearby building, through glass.
Production of Deadpool 2 began in late June with David Leitch at the helm. The Reynolds-starrer is the highly anticipated sequel to Fox's 2016 Marvel anti-hero film. For weeks, both Reynolds and co-star Josh Brolin have been teasing updates on production.
In a statement a spokesperson for Fox offered: "We are deeply saddened by the accident that occurred on the set of Deadpool 2 this morning. Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of our crew member during this difficult time."
Deadpool 2 has a June 1, 2018, release date.
