D.J. Caruso, who last directed xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, is in talks to helm Are You Afraid of the Dark?,  Paramount Players' big-screen take on the 1990s anthology series.

Gary Dauberman, the writer behind the New Line horror movies It and Annabelle: Creation, penned the script and will produce the project.

The conceit of Afraid of the Dark was that the stories in each episode were campfire tales told by a group of teens who called themselves the Midnight Society, ranging from modern takes on fairy tales to stories involving creatures such as vampires and aliens.

The show was initially a Canadian series that got picked up by Nickelodeon and aired as part of its Saturday night block.

The movie version, with the most recent drafts written by BenDavid Grabinski, is intended to be darker and scarier in tone.

Caruso made a name for himself directing the Shia Labeouf-starring thrillers Disturbia and Eagle Eye. He last helmed Return of Xander Cage, which proved to be a surprise international hit, grossing more than $346 million worldwide and relaunching the Vin Diesel action franchise. Caruso, who is repped by CAA, Media Talent Group and Bloom Hergott, is slated to direct the next installment, which will shoot sometime in 2019.
