The doc follows the story of a group of friends as they attempted a shot-for-shot remake of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark.'

Drafthouse Films has acquired the worldwide rights the documentary Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made.

The doc, from Jeremy Coon and Tim Skousen, follows a group of 11-year-old friends on their journey to create a shot-for-shot remake of Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark, which turns out to be a seven year-long labor of love. The documentary sees the group reunited two decades later to film the final scene left out of their passionate endeavor, complete with an exploding airplane.

"Raiders! is a perfect brand fit for us," said Drafthouse Films COO James Emanuel Shapiro. "And we’re proud to continue the legacy of the truly greatest fan film ever made!"

"We couldn't be happier in partnering with a bunch of true film fans like Drafthouse Films to release Raiders!" said Skousen. "It's the perfect match for our story about three film crazed kids spending their entire childhood recreating the all-time classic, Raiders of the Lost Ark."

The film, which was executive produced by Kyle Newman, screened at several festivals, including SXSW, DOC NYC and the Fantasia International Film Festival.

Drafthouse is planning a limited theatrical release in the summer of 2016, with a simultaneous VOD and digital releases.
