Lionsgate's latest move into the gaming space will turn Sylvester Stallone's action movie franchise into a smartphone and tablet game for release next year.

Lionsgate has partnered with Avi Lerner’s Millennium Films and Hong Kong-based mobile game developer Fifth Journey to create a mobile game based on The Expendables action movie franchise.

The deal is the latest by the studio as it looks to turn existing and original IP into episodic games and TV. The Expendables game, based on the movie franchise with nearly $800 million in global box office to date, will be released on mobile phones and tablets in late 2016.

"With Lionsgate’s tremendous marketing prowess and Fifth Journey’s game development and publishing savvy, we’re fortunate to have innovative and visionary partners who know how to take The Expendables to a new level with a ground-breaking game that will thrill old and new audiences alike," Millennium's Lerner said Wednesday in a statement.

The Expendables game announcement was also made by Lionsgate president of interactive ventures and games Peter Levin and Eric Tan, co-founder and CEO of Fifth Journey. Lionsgate earlier invested in game developer Telltale, which produced episodic games based on The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones TV series, and Finnish games developer Next Games as it gets into developing and marketing mobile and social media games based on its existing properties.

Besides StalloneThe Expendables franchise also stars Jason Statham, Jet Li, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronda Rousey.
