'Fault In Our Stars' Director to Tackle 'X-Men' Spinoff Film 'New Mutants'
X-Men fans have been clamoring for this for a while, and now it’s one step closer to reality.
Fox has hired Josh Boone, the director of its teen drama Fault in Our Stars, to develop New Mutants, an X-Men spinoff.
Boone will co-write the script with Knate Gwaltney and will also direct. Simon Kinberg is producing the project with Lauren Shuler Donner.
New Mutants, created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, is in many ways ideally suited to Boone, who showed a sensitivity to teen relationships with Fault in Our Stars.
The comic was the first ever X-Men spinoff, launched in the early 1980s as X-Men was on its way to becoming Marvel’s best selling and biggest franchise, featuring the angst-driven adventures of a diverse group of mutants: Brazilian Sunspot, Native American Mirage, Scots girl Wolfsbane, Vietnamese Karma, and a Kentuckian codenamed Cannonball.
Boone has several projects in the hopper that are vying for his attention. Among them is the adaptation of the Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles for Universal and Imagine as well as the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, set up at Warners.
Boone is repped by CAA and Bloom Hergott, Gwaltney is repped by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman.
