BOOM! Studios’ expansion of Fox’s Firefly franchise continues next year, with the debut of a new title, Firefly: Bad Company, focusing on fan-favorite supporting castmember Saffron.

Although the character, played by Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks, only appeared in two episodes of the short-lived television series created by Joss Whedon, she nonetheless won the heart of the show’s devoted fan base. Now she’s at the center of the oversized issue scheduled for release in March.

“Saffron is one of the most fascinating characters in Firefly,” BOOM! executive editor Jeanine Schaefer said Thursday in a statement. “In just a handful of appearances, she rocketed to fan-favorite with the perfect mix of charisma, cunning and controlled chaos that makes us want to know what quickly became clear was unknowable... neither by us, nor by Saffron herself. But what we do know is that she’s not someone to be crossed, and her drive to survive by any means necessary makes her one of those most dangerous characters our crew has encountered.”

The title, by Josh Lee Gordon and Francesco Mortarino, will tie in with the storyline in BOOM!’s core Firefly series and launches a new line of spinoff projects connected to the Whedon property.

“This is just the beginning of BOOM! Studios’ plans to dig deeper into the untold stories from Firefly that fans have demanded,” teased Schaefer, adding, “Saffron has a big role to play in 2019!”

Firefly: Bad Company No. 1 will be released digitally and in comic book stores March 20.
