'X-Men' Spinoff 'Gambit' Loses Director Gore Verbinski
Gambit is in need of a new director.
Pirates of the Caribbean filmmaker Gore Verbinski has exited the Channing Tatum X-Men spinoff, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. This is an unusual move so late in the game, as the Fox film has been in casting mode and has been gearing up to shoot in New Orleans in March. After news broke of Verbinski's exit, Fox said Gambit has pushed back its release date of Feb. 14, 2019, to June 7, 2019.
Verbinski is just one of a number of directors who have come and gone on the project. Verbinski joined the movie in October following the departures of Rupert Wyatt in October 2015 and Doug Liman in August 2016.
Gambit will star Tatum as the New Orleans-based mutant known for throwing cards and manipulating kinetic energy. It's been a passion project for the actor, who has long been attached and appeared as a surprise guest at Fox's X-Men panel at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2015.
The film has a script by Josh Zetumer and is being produced by Tatum, Reid Carolin, Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner.
