Is Stan Lee a cosmic entity?
Heat Vision breakdown
While that's certainly a question that could be asked of the real Stan Lee — who has only just started showing signs of slowing down at age 94 — it's the Stan Lee that appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that fans are talking about this time around, thanks to some recent comments about Lee's cameos in the many Marvel movies to date.
Talking about Lee's cameo in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where he's seen talking to a group of Watchers — an alien race who, in the comics, exist to observe important events in the universe for record-keeping purposes — studio president Kevin Feige said (per Screen Rant) that the cameo was intended to nod towards the fan theory that Stan Lee plays the same exact character in every single Marvel movie … who just happens to be a Watcher. "We always thought it would be fun," he said.
Feige continued, "Stan Lee clearly exists, you know, above and apart from the reality of all the films. So the notion that he could be sitting there on a cosmic pit stop during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun — James had that idea and we shot that cameo and loved it so much, you know, you see it a couple of times in the movie. It wasn't in for a long time and we put it back in towards the end of the process where he references that time he was a Federal Express agent — we thought it would be fun to put that in there because that really says, so wait a minute, he's this same character who's popped up in all these films."
While this isn't confirmation of Watcher-status, it is enough of a nod to drive fan theorists wild … at least until the revelation that movie Stan Lee is actually a Skrull spy.
