'Guardians of the Galaxy' Director Offers Fan $100K Promise Over Mystery Easter Egg
James Gunn is putting his money where his mouth is.
On Facebook Thursday, the Guardians of the Galaxy director fielded a question about a much sought-after Easter egg in the 2014 Marvel film, with a fan asking if he plans on ever revealing it. Gunn responded that he had no plans on revealing the Easter egg, which the director first teased two years ago and so far nobody has found.
This answer prompted another fan to cry foul: "He won't reveal it because it doesn't exist. The ultimate troll."
Gunn brought out the big guns in his response, vowing to pay the commenter $100,000 if there is no Easter egg.
"If there is no Easter egg I will give you a hundred thousand dollars," Gunn wrote on Facebook.
News of the mystery Easter egg first came to light in November 2014, when Gunn was doing press for the Guardians of the Galaxy Blu-ray.
Some fans have misunderstood what the $100,000 offer entails, thinking Gunn will pay money for people who spot the Easter egg. Gunn has tried to dispell this incorrect interpretation:
I never offered anyone 100k for the Easter Egg. I told a guy I’d give him 100k if it doesn’t exist (which I would, but it does). https://t.co/K37UZCoM1Z— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) November 18, 2016
NO I DID NOT. I said I’d give 100k if there was no Easter Egg (there is). This is gonna haunt me… https://t.co/HEEPnq9pzk— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) November 18, 2016
Gunn maintains a close relationship with fans thanks to his active social media accounts, where questions about this Easter egg pop up often (though not as much as requests to know when the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer will arrive.)
