Why Doesn't Gamora Talk in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailers?
Like the best assassins, Guardians of the Galaxy's Gamora is silent but deadly — or, at least, definitely silent.
Zoe Saldana's character is the only member of the original team who doesn't get a line of dialogue in any of the first three trailers for this May's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (And, no, pedants; a scream in the Super Bowl spot doesn't count); in fact, if you ignore half-sister Nebula (Karen Gillen), she's the only member of the team not to speak in the Super Bowl spot — even newcomers Yondu and Mantis get a couple of lines.
The strangest thing is, this isn't actually a new phenomenon: Gamora didn't get to say anything in either of the two trailers for the first Guardians of the Galaxy, either:
The strange lack of Gamora dialogue in promotion even extended so far as to include the "Meet the Guardians of the Galaxy: Gamora" spotlight video, which features Saldana talking about the character, but not anything from Gamora herself:
To make matters even more odd, there's the fact that Gamora did get the chance to say something in the international promotion for the movie, such as in this British trailer for the first movie, asking Star Lord why he'd want to be a good guy:
So, what's with Gamora's silence in domestic promotion? Is it that her character, being the straight woman of the group, doesn't have any trailer-ready zingers? That she actually is being promoted as a silent-but-deadly character, whose actions — apparently, jumping and stabbing, judging by the trailers, but in terms of promotion for the first movie, "looking sultrily at the camera" could also be added — speak louder than any words? Or has someone at Marvel Studios' promo department just got something against the way Saldana sounds?
With three months — and probably at least one more trailer — to go until the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, there's still time to right this wrong and let Gamora be heard in the promotion of the movie. Maybe the next trailer could just be all Gamora, all the time, offering up exposition about what to expect in the new movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released May 5.
