Streep, Johnny Depp and others tease what to expect from the Stephen Sondheim adaptation

It’s been eight long years since we last saw Meryl Streep singing on the big screen — alongside Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried in the movie version of Mamma Mia — but the drought is almost over, as a new tease for the upcoming Into The Woods demonstrates.

In addition to Streep, the video also shows Emily Blunt, future Late, Late Show host James Corden and other cast and crew explain the concept behind the adaptation of the famous Stephen Soldheim musical.

“It’s not just a musical, it’s not just a comedy, it’s not just a drama, it’s all of those things interwoven,” director Rob Marshall says, while Streep and co-star Johnny Depp compliments Marshall’s work on the movie. “His approach is very pure,” he says. “He’s out there to make something beautiful — he’s the real thing.”

Of course, the highlight of the video is the brief chance to hear Streep take on “Stay With Me,” the ballad the witch shares with her daughter, Rapunzel, played by Mackenzie Mauzy (It begins at 2:30, if you want to skip ahead). It’s all too brief, but more can be heard when Into The Woods hits theaters Dec. 25. For now, consider this a Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
