How Many 'Star Trek' Cosplayers Can You Fit Into One Convention Hall?

At this weekend's "Star Trek 2013" convention in Las Vegas, organizers hope to set a new world record for the largest gathering of "Star Trek" cosplayers in one room.

Here's a question: If you were looking to find the largest number of people in Star Trek cosplay in one room at the same time, where would you look? The official answer, somewhat unexpectedly, is a convention center in London, England -- but only until this weekend, if the organizers of Star Trek 2013 have their way.

This weekend's Trek convention in Vegas hopes to reclaim the Guinness World Book of Records title for "Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Star Trek Characters" -- yes, there really is such a record -- by bringing more than 1,064 people together in one room on the Saturday of the show. The Las Vegas convention had previously set the record in August 2011 with 1,040 participants, only to find itself outnumbered by just 23 fans at a British convention a year later.

The record attempt is far from the centerpiece of the Las Vegas show. There are the celebrity guests -- including William Shatner, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Karl Urban, amongst the 100-plus attendees connected with the show and movies in one way or another, as well as a Star Trek on Broadway "gala celebration," karaoke parties and, of course, the traditional costume party and vendors' room in which visitors can buy all manner of merchandise.

Star Trek 2013 runs from August 8-11 at the Rio Suites Hotel in Las Vegas. There's no rule that those who attend have to do so in costume, but let's be honest: If you're going anyway, wouldn't you feel some kind of responsibility to uphold national pride and try and bring the record back to America…?
