IFC Midnight has acquired the U.S. rights to Anthony Scott Burns’ Come True, a sci-fi nightmare that had a world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival and just ahead of a U.S. premiere Friday at the inaugural NIGHTSTREAM virtual festival.

The Canadian indie from Copperheart Entertainment stars Julia Sarah Stone (The Killing) and Landon Liboiron and is set for an early 2021 release by IFC Midnight. Come True portrays a troubled teenager seeking help to end her disturbing nightmares and taking part in a secretive university sleep study, only to release dark forces from within as frightening dreams shared by her fellow patients are exposed.

The film is produced by Steven Hoban, Mark Smith, Brent Kawchuck and Nicholas Bechard. The executive producer credits are shared by Vincenzo Natali, Andrea Hatzinikolas, Chris Wallace, Bob Crowe and Karyn Nolan.

"We’re thrilled to reteam with Anthony on another innovative genre-bender, which is already garnering attention during this unprecedented period for festivals and the industry. Being able to work with filmmakers on multiple projects throughout the years is something we strive for as a company and often feels like a dream come true," Arianna Bocco, executive vp of acquisitions and productions at IFC Films said in a statement.

Burns made waves when he directed a self-made fan trailer for Tron, which he followed up with the sci-fi-tinged short film Manifold. He also directed the ghost tale feature Our House, which saw Thomas Mann play a young inventor who discovers a link to the afterlife.

"I am thrilled to have IFC onboard as our American home for Come True. The film was created to entertain audiences who love the horror genre, but also appreciate the unpredictable nature of independent cinema. IFC are proven masters of both realms, so I know we're in the best hands," director Scott Burns said in his own statement.

Recent IFC Films releases include Dave Franco’s The Rental, Natalie Erika James’ Relic and The Pierce Brothers’ The Wretched.

The deal for the Come True acquisition was negotiated by IFC Films’ director of acquisitions Aijah Keith with XYZ Films’ Pip Ngo on behalf of the filmmakers.
