Jared Leto Knows Fans Are Losing It Over "Society" Line in New 'Justice League' Trailer
Jared Leto knows what he is doing. On Sunday morning, the new trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League dropped, and social media was set ablaze.
Fans were already hyped for the upcoming four-hour HBO Max cut, which revamps Snyder's original vision from the disappointing 2017 film. And in the nearly three-minute trailer, it was the final few seconds that sent viewers through the roof. Leto returned as the Joker.

But it was not just the character's first appearance since 2016's Suicide Squad, but what he said that had so many chatting. Leto's (much darker and creepier) Joker actually utters "We live in a society," which has been a Joker-related meme for years. No iteration of the Joker has ever said the phrase on film (even though there was a petition to have Joaquin Phoenix do so in 2019's Joker) but it's hugely popular online to express displeasure over a comparable situation, these days mostly done sarcastically or to be overdramatic.
The phrase was trending most of the morning due to fans being thrilled it was said (some hated it, of course). And then around 10 a.m., Leto let everyone know he was in on it when he tweeted out the trailer, writing only: "We live in a society."

For the new cut, Snyder filmed several minutes of new footage and assembled castmembers Ben Affleck (Batman), Ray Fisher (Cyborg) and Amber Heard (Mera) for the new shots. He also enlisted Suicide Squad star Leto to play Joker, though he wasn't involved in the original version of the movie. Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Henry Cavill (Superman) and Ezra Miller (Flash) also star in Justice League.
Zack Snyder's Justice League, which is rated R, hits HBO Max on March 18.
