Bad Robot Tackling Possession, Time Travel, "'Clerks' for a New Generation" With Movie Projects
Bad Robot, the production company run by J.J. Abrams which is coming off the opening of Overlord, usually keeps most of its development under a shroud of secrecy.
But on Wednesday, the banner, which is in production on Star Wars IX, announced six big-screen projects from up-and-coming filmmakers that are in development. The projects are not yet set up at a studio.
The projects include:
The Steps: This twist on the possession story will be penned by Blair Butler, who wrote the horror movies Hellfest and Polaroid, and is based on an original idea by Stefan Grube, the editor of Bad Robot’s 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Front Runner and who is working on Star Wars IX.
Untitled Megan Amram thriller: Amram, a writer and co-executive producer of The Good Place, is penning the project, a female-driven horror allegory.
The Seven Sisters of Scott County: This tale of moonshine, trucking and sisterhood hails from Courtney Hoffman, the costumer-turned-filmmaker behind the acclaimed female Western short The Good Time Girls, which stars Laura Dern and Alia Shawkat.
Untitled Ben Shiffrin thriller: The writer of 2016’s cat body-swapping movie Nine Lives has been hired to pen a contained time-travel story.
Everything Must Go: A vehicle for Bobby Hall, aka rapper Logic, who is co-writing the script with Lisa McQuillan (Dr. Ken, Alex Inc.). The project is being described as “Clerks for a new generation.”
Only the Lonely: Dylan Meyer and Peter Glanz are writing this sci-fi romance that has Grube attached to direct.
Butler is repped by ICM Partners and Industry Entertainment; Grube is with ICM, Grandview and Gang Tyre; Shiffrin is repped by UTA, Gotham Group and McKuin Frankel; Hall is with CAA; McQuillan is repped by UTA; Glanz is with ICM, Mosaic and Hansen Jacobson; and Amram, Hoffman and Meyer is repped by WME.
