Despite the release of both a poster and a trailer for this summer's Godzilla reboot, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have tried to keep the visuals of the reborn giant lizard monster under wraps to date. But the secret is finally out -- if you're willing to put up with a fuzzy, black-and-white image, that is.

The subscriber-exclusive cover to the latest issue of Empire Magazine -- released February 27 -- features a look at Godzilla himself, albeit one that's been manipulated to appear more grainy to better fit the propaganda poster style it's meant to achieve.

Director Gareth Edwards tells the magazine that the movie's designers felt that "trying to get the face [of the monster] right" was the biggest challenge. "I guess he's got more of a bear's face, or a dog's," he said. "We also used eagle. There's a lot of nobility in an eagle. It made him feel very majestic and noble."

While the cover doesn't reveal much more about the monster than what we've already seen, it has to be said: He looks a lot like all of the other versions of the monster we've seen, which feels a little underwhelming after all of the secrecy to date. Have all of the attempts to keep the monster's look a surprise backfired by raising expectations unnecessarily?

Godzilla will be released May 16.
