Angelina Jolie Returns as Villain in 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' Teaser Trailer

Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville, Harris Dickinson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein and Chiwetel Ejiofor also star in the sequel.

Walt Disney Studios has released the first teaser trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Angelina Jolie reprises her role as the titular character. The fantasy adventure film picks up several years after the 2014 movie, which told the origin story of how Maleficent became a notorious villain and came to put a sleeping curse on Aurora (Elle Fanning). The sequel continues to explore the strained relationship between Maleficent and Aurora as they face challenges to protect the magical creatures that reside in the enchanted forest kingdom Moors.

Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville also reprise their roles, while new cast members include Harris Dickinson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Joachim Ronning directed.

The trailer opens with a visual of fairies flying near a kingdom. The tone quickly turns grim as Queen Ingrith (Pfeiffer) says in a voiceover, "I remember a story of an evil witch and the princess she cursed to sleep forever. The story became legend, but this is no fairy tale." Clips of Maleficent watching over the land and Prince Phillip (Dickinson) proposing to Aurora play throughout.

Maleficent soon comes face to face with Queen Ingrith. "There are many who prey on the innocent. I'm sure your kind would agree," Maleficent tells the queen. When she responds that Maleficent's comment seems like a threat, the villain mocks her and questions her competence.

Intense shots of Maleficent and other magical creatures flying follow as Aurora and the villain reluctantly join forces to save the land they call home.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was originally set to hit theaters on May 29, 2020, but the release date was moved up to Oct. 18, 2019.
