'Martian' Actress Mackenzie Davis Joins 'Blade Runner' Sequel (Exclusive)
Mackenzie Davis, the actress who appeared in The Martian and also stars in Halt and Catch Fire, has joined the cast of Alcon Entertainment’s sequel to Blade Runner.
The actress will now join Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in the sci-fi project, being directed by Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed filmmaker behind drug drama Sicario. The roll call also includes Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, Carla Juri and Robin Wright.
Plot details are being kept under wraps but it is known that the story takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original and that Ford is reprising his role as replicant hunter Rick Deckard.
Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the original) and Michael Green wrote the new screenplay based on an idea by Fancher and Ridley Scott.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin in July with Warner Bros. distributing in North America and Sony Pictures Releasing International handling the rest of the world.
The role is a get for Davis, the Canadian actress who’s skewed more toward indie fare — her feature debut was Breathe In with Guy Pearce and then she starred in the alcoholism drama Smashed from James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, The End of the Tour), with most of her work being in that field.
She does star in Catch Fire, AMC’s 1980s tech drama that also features Lee Pace and Scoot McNairy.
Davis is repped by UTA, Thruline Entertainment and Sloane Offer.
