Not content with announcing a storyline that teams up multiple variations of Spider-Man, Marvel Entertainment has announced a new ongoing series, featuring its third distinct version of the wall-crawler with a revival of Spider-Man 2099 coming later this year.

The new series, to be written by the character's creator Peter David with art by Will Sliney, will join The Amazing Spider-Man and Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man as regular series from the publisher, in addition to the already-announced The Amazing Spider-Man Year One mini-series.

As the result of recent events, the character -- who originates in the year 2099 (hence his name) -- has become trapped in the contemporary Marvel Universe. "Straight away, we have to deal with the fact that in the greatest of Marvel traditions, we have a hero out of time," Sliney told David added that, while he's trapped in the past, he'll try to alter his own history. "He will try to exert influence over what sort of company Alchemax [which is responsible for his powers ] develops into," he explained.

Returning to the character he created over two decades earlier is "thrilling and also kind of nerve-wracking," the writer admitted. "I feel as if I have a lot to live up to."

Spider-Man 2099 launches later this year.
