A three-part prequel series will start the countdown to December's stand-alone 'Star Wars' movie.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will begin earlier than expected.

At an industry breakfast Friday morning at Chicago's C2E2 convention, Marvel Entertainment announced that a three-issue prequel comic book to this holiday season's Star Wars movie will launch in October, with an additional one-off issue to follow at a later date. No details of the storyline or creators were given.

The story was first reported, via a leaked photograph, by comic news site Bleeding Cool, with Marvel later confirming the news to ComicBook.com.

The publishing model follows Marvel's initial plans for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was originally to be preceded by the four-issue series Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens — Shattered Empire and a one-shot focusing on the character of C-3PO. (Delays in the approval process led to the C-3PO comic book being pushed back to mid-April.)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which takes place immediately prior to the original Star Wars movie, will be released in theaters this December.
