Marvel Launches Digital Originals Line With 'Jessica Jones'

Three new titles will be announced for the digital imprint on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con.

Ahead of the official launch of San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Entertainment has unveiled a new line of digital comics based on characters starring in its television properties. The Marvel Digital Originals line officially debuted Wednesday with the launch of a new Jessica Jones series, with more titles to be announced in upcoming days.

Talking to IGN about the line, editor Nick Lowe said, "There’s a huge audience out there — not just on the Netflix front but on ABC, Freeform, Hulu, etc. — that experience these characters digitally. In fact, it was hard not to notice when characters like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist were some of our biggest sellers in the digital marketplace. That was the inspiration for the Kaare Andrews/Afu Chan’s Iron Fists digital strategy and this next big step for us."

The Marvel Digital Originals line will differ from Marvel’s traditional offerings by running 40 pages at a $4.99 price point, as opposed to the print tradition for the publisher of 20 pages for $3.99. "We looked at the velocity of many of the digital release programs of our television shows and thought twice-the-content might fit the bill here, too," Lowe told IGN.

Three more MDO titles will be announced on Saturday during Marvel’s “Next Big Thing” Comic-Con panel at 1:45 p.m. in Room 6A, but there’s a fifth MDO title already in publication — the existing Cloak and Dagger digital series that launched last month will be brought under the MDO banner, according to the publisher.
